Licensing
Free in production. One thing needs a licence.
The server is source-available under the Business Source License 1.1. The Rust SDK and command line are Apache 2.0. Neither is a surprise in the small print.
The server
Business Source License 1.1.
Production use is free, including use by and within a commercial company. Two things need a commercial licence from the licensor: providing TessariDB S3 to third parties as an object storage service — where parties other than your own staff and contractors can create, manage or control buckets, objects, access keys or storage policies — and selling, reselling, renting or sublicensing it.
Each release converts to the Apache License 2.0 on its change date, four years after it is published. The date for the current code is in the repository's LICENSE, which is the text that governs.
| Use | Allowed |
|---|---|
| Your company's backups, media, data lake, AI datasets | yes, free |
| Inside a product you sell, storing your own data | yes, free |
| Modifying it and running the modified version yourself | yes, free |
| Offering buckets to customers as a storage service | commercial licence |
| Selling or reselling the server itself | commercial licence |
The client
Apache 2.0, and nothing of the server's licence reaches it.
tessaridb-s3-client and tessaridb-s3-cli depend on the S3 protocol, never on the server's code, so a program that embeds them carries only Apache 2.0. They work with any S3-compatible store.
